4TH ANNIVERSARY OPENING REMARKS BY THE CHAIR DR BLAZE ON 21ST JUNE 2019

  • Dear Esteemed Leaders,Senior Colleagues and Colleagues,

It is once again with all sense of humility and responsibility that I welcome you all to the 4th Anniversary of Doctors' Time Out Family( DTOF) Organisation. It was just like yesterday when Dr Ude Anthony Chukwunonso aka Narcolepsy birthed the idea of having a virtual lounge where Doctors can take time off their ever busy and demanding work schedule to relax and while doing so discuss about recent events in both the medical and contemporary world, share relevant news, cross pollinate ideas, socialise, build friendship and also get involved in works of charity .

In order to succeed at this task,he brought together great minds in the medical profession, leaders who have sacrificed so much to advance the course of doctors and the medical profession in the country and even across the globe. Leaders who have indeed cut their teeth in the annals of the medical profession.

So it didn't come as a surprise that we have evolved from a WhatsApp Social media group into a fully registered Non Governmental Organisation with sole aim of contributing our quota to the betterment of our society.

Our major theme of this 4th year Anniversary  " *Putting mental health in the front burner: curbing the menace of depression and suicide in Nigeria* is quite apt as suicide rate in the nation is increasing at an alarming rate with many young individuals who hitherto would do anything to survive are rather taking  their own lives. While growing up,there were a lot of things that were anathema, strange and a taboo to our culture, suicide was one of them. It is then heartbreaking to hear of several recurrent incidents of suicides on account of some persons suffering from emotional heartbreaks, domestic violence or inability to meet up with financial demands.

Then the notion of Africans are strong willed individuals who could survive the slave trade era and rise above it without contemplating suicides will rather have their back bend under the weight of depression to the extent of taking their own lives. Could this worrisome trend be attributed to the socioeconomic state of the nation,or are we now giving birth to emotionally weak children or we have always lived in self denial that Africans rarely suffer from depression. Some of these issues are what our Guest Speaker ,the Erudite Dr Olatunde Olayinka AYINDE,FWAP(Psychiatry)  would do justice to and probably proffers ways to curb this menace.

On our part DTOF is launching  a suicide/counselling helplines where members of the public who are depressed or suffering from one form of   depression or the other  can have the opportunity to talk to health experts and seek medical help.We are using this medium to ask for volunteers from our colleagues in mental health and other colleagues who would like to volunteer some minutes or hours of their spare time to pls come forward. We will provide them with special lines that will be used strictly for this purpose and the phone lines will only come on when they are available to counsel people. The phone numbers that will be available for counselling will be updated regularly on our website www.DTOF.com.ng from time to time so that members of the public can know what numbers are available for them to call and at what time of the day they will be available also. Interested persons can pls reach Dr Besong on 08067070451 .

We want to thank our leader and father in the medical Profession, Professor Francis Faduyile( NMA President)for his immense support and fatherly role he has played in the success of DTOF. We also want to thank other  leaders(past and present) who have made various contributions both in cash and kind for a befitting 4th DTOF anniversary, I pray that God Almighty should continue to guide, protect ,bless you all and replenish your pockets a million.

Lastly I want to urge us all while we yet in flesh and blood and still well oriented in time, place and person to do whatever we can to better humanity for in the end Narco's skull and bones cant be differentiated from mine on mere inspection when we both long dead and gone  but rather only our deeds( whether good or bad) will speak for us.

Thank you and God bless you all.

Long live the Nigerian Medical Profession!

    Long Live DTOF!!

Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!

    Dr Oamen John Blaze,
    Chairman DTOF.
