As part of the activities marking the DTOF 6th anniversary, the South South zone of DTOF on Saturday 26th June, 2021, carried out some charity activities at the Paediatrics wards of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba and the Asaba Specialist Hospital (ASH) both in Delta State.

The first port of call was at the office of the Head of Department, Paediatrics FMC Asaba where she welcomed the team of philanthropist and enumerated the challenges faced by Doctors and Nurses in taking care of their patients, which majorly is the inability of most patients to buy their drugs, which usually leave the Doctors contributing to buy drugs for the sick babies.

AT FMC Asaba Paediatrics ward, led by the HOD, we met and interfaced with the parents of a 12year old girl child who suffered severe burns on her left upper limb.

The parents of the child had signed to leave against Doctors advice (LAMA) as a result of financial constraints. However, they were still being held back as a result of the already accumulated hospital bill.

DTOF members were moved by the plight of this girl child and decided to take up the entire hospital bill and the planed skin grafting. We discussed and agreed that DTOF should take up the case, pay the outstanding hospital bills and then pay for the skin grafting.

We then mandated the DTOF Asaba Coordinators to interface with the hospital CMD for a discount and get back to the ethics committee.

Two other children in the same ward were given cash envelopes to support the purchase of drugs for their treatment.

A DTOF branded T-shirt was then given to the HOD of paediatrics admists group photographs and a vote of thanks by the very excited HOD who expressed her willingness to be a part of DTOF, thanked DTOF and prayed for future partnership for bigger projects.

At the Asaba Specialist Hospital (ASH), we met with the MD who witnessed a cash donation by DTOF members to another child in the Paediatrics ward of ASH who was the 4th beneficiary of DTOF SS charity donation for that day.

Still at ASH, the MD led the team to the sickle cell centre where Dr Akpowaye, one of the SS DTOF Coordinators for Delta State, alongside the DTOF Chairman - Dr John Blaze handed over a cash donation to a beneficiary (Sickle Cell patient), the 5th beneficiary of the DTOF Asaba charity event.

The Chairman of DTOF Dr John Blaze later briefed the MD of ASH on the philosophy and activities of DTOF. A DTOF branded T-shirt was given to the MD of ASH as a souvenir after which we took a group photograph.
