CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE by the NMA ON THE 6th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE DOCTORS’ TIME OUT FAMILY(DTOF) delivered by the Secretary General of the Association IN JUNE 2021

A Congratulatory Message on the 6th Year Anniversary Celebration of Doctors Timeout Family (DTOF) by the Secretary General of the Nigerian Medical Association Dr Philips Uche Ekpe on Minday 14th June 2021 at 09.00 hours

Good morning highly esteemed colleagues, it's indeed my pleasure and a privilege to address you on this occasion of the 6th anniversary of the *Doctors TimeOut Family.

I congratulate immensely the DTOF members all over ; the Ethics and Privileges Commitee and particularly the founder of this blog Dr Anthony Ude aka Narcolepsy a former Secretary General of NARD and also to all members  for making this blog a place to be.

I appreciate your astute and critical contribution. Indeed this platform is an encyclopedia of trending information affecting the Medical world and our society in general. If you want to seek unsolicited current information with varied opinion this is the place to be.

The information,  criticism and all other contributions including the debates ihas helped towards the sustenance of welfare and well-being for all members of NARD/NMA.

Political awareness and engagement of doctors nationwide has also contributed greatly in the moulding of our Profession to the general interest of all. The increased closeness between the younger Doctors and elderly Doctors as a result of DTOF cannot be over emphasized this was exemplified by the various deposition and interactions by our respected Elders.

I for one is an everyday visitor to this platform and the knowledge gained is far reaching.

All the members have shown their high level of intellectual depositions here which is in tandem with the general knowledge that the average Nigerian trained Doctor ranks amongst the best at home and in diaspora.

The themes of this years anniversary *

Main theme

Postgraduate Medical Education in Nigeria: the future of MBBS, PhD, MD and Fellowship in medical education in Nigeria.(With a diasporean perspective) This is very apt as the issues of NUC PhD vs Fellowship had remained a torn in the Medical Profession exemplified by the current shameful and disgrace shenanigans facing the Vice Chancellor appointment of the Lagos State University an attempt to subvert the will of the people and to debase Medical Profession which we are resisting by all means possible. NMA Position is clear on this, the Fellowship is the highest academic and professional qualification in Medicine

Subthemes

Medico-legal issues in contemporary radiological practice and Telemedicine : Pitfalls and Pearls

Telemedicine and Remote consulting  : Improving Medical Efficiency during the pandemic

Again the sub themes are on point considering the new normal occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, looking at the gains, importance of Telemedicine  and its medicolegal implications to avoid inadvertent ethical breach.

We as members of NMA are following this event intentionally as we are not immuned to adopting good willed and robust recommendations that will help in making NMA in pursuing its vision and achieving its mission to the general interest of the Nigerian people and Doctors.

NMA will ensure that a conducive atmosphere is enabled to help in the implementation of the recommendations of the fall out of this event if falls within our mandate and constitutional responsibility or is absolutely necessary. We encourage all Nigerian Doctors and indeed all Healthcare workers as first line contacts and front line workers to take advantage of the free Covid-19 Vaccine  procured by the Federal  Government

As we said in the 5th Anniversary:  "Our NOC is interested in valuable and profitable discourse channelled towards inspiring members to responsibly bring forth their thoughts for debate and if they are the superior view(s), we promise to appropriately deploy them in line with the NMA constitution"

We will also appreciate it that in our depositions during this event and other times, that our discussions should be issue and solution based with constructive criticism and avoid insinuations,  preemptions,  innuendos and use of derogatory language. We also appeal for the tuning down of ethnoreligious base debate and discussion as these seem to divide us the more than foster our togetherness.

As regards the NARD agitation for welfare of her members, NMA remains committeed to the welfare of Nigerian Doctors as such supports NARD in her pursuit of good working condition and appropriate and improved Healthcare delivery.

At this juncture I ll also to appeal to members of the platform to reduce aspersions on our Officers whom we have entrusted to represent us and are making the sacrifice to serve you. Constructive criticisms are appreciated and encouragement is equally needed as a source of strength to serve.

It is also important to note that every depositions are read but we do not necessarily have to respond here as there are constitutional channels of information.

We are also circumspect in the information released especially when actions are still in evolution and inconclusive, this is to avoid passing the wrong information that will unnecessarily heat up the polity moreover it is wisdom not to expose your arsenal.

As we are all aware, our Profession is under attacks from all corners and we are seriously engaged to making sure we protect and maintain the dignity of our Profession. This we do to preserve it for today and for tomorrow, this is our only collective Profession.

We are also serious working  on improving the meagre much talked about hazard allowance, the improvement in retirement age to match those of other profession.

Our doors are wide open. Please feel free to call, Dm, write a memo as we are open to suggestions and if considered good enough will be implemented  in line with our constitution.

Once again thank you for this opportunity. We do not take it for granted.

Happy 6th Anniversary Doctor's Timeout Family

Yours in Service

Dr PHILIP EKPE

SECRETARY GENERAL NMA. 2020-2022
