DOCTOR TIME OUT FAMILY: SUMMARY OF THE 2nd Anniversary Celebration - JUNE 2017

Preamble 

Doctors Time Out Family (DTOF) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) established initially as a Social media initiative of Dr Anthony Chukwunonso Ude (Narcolepsy), a Radiologist in training in University College Hospital Ibadan.

The organization started as a whatsapp group 2years ago precisely on 15th June 2015, and members include doctors from all 36 states and the FCT and cut across all cadre of doctors mostly below the rank of consultants ( attendings ) in all levels of health care delivery including: PHC centers, general hospitals, federal medical centers and teaching hospitals.

 The organization recognizes the tremendous power of social media and utilizes this means to bridge the communication gap among Nigerian doctors.It addresses all issues affecting members on its very effective platforms and always rises to the occasion in all cases of unfair treatment of doctors and their representatives nationwide.

DTOF through its activities is undergoing a remarkable transformation into an organization geared towards the sustenance of welfare for all members of National Association of Resident Doctors(NARD) & Nigeria Medical Association(NMA) political sensitization, mobilization and engagement of doctors nationwide, bridging the communication divide between junior doctors and that between doctors and the public, driving support for the establishment of a well stuructured residency training program, dismantling inter-professional strife in the health sector, addressing areas of health needs especially in vulnerable communities, caring for the needy and less privileged, improving the national health insurance quality and coverage and is committed to reduce capital flight due to health tourism from Nigeria.

From inception, this family of doctors has never failed to remember the down trodden and vulnerable among the Nigerian society.The family organizes annual free medical services, social aid and scholarships to disadvantaged communities, orphanages, old people’s homes and indigent students. This goes a long way to show a shining example of good social corporate responsibility.  A reminder to Nigerians, that we’re as strong as our weakest links and that a nation must provide a means of taking care of the weak, the fallen, and the forgotten among her people.

Last week marked the celebration of the 2nd anniversary of this beautiful family of doctors with the theme :Doctors as Heads of Tertiary Health Institutions in Nigeria : Problems and Prospects-

As a mark of distinction, activities bearing her trademarks took place nationwide. Funding for all social and humanitarian services (medical outreaches, health talks and orphanage/elderly home visits) was solely borne by this family and well-meaning Nigerians.

Opening prayer was said by Dr Umeyor Chinedu ,President Association of Resident Doctors(ARD) Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe

Opening speech and theme of the week was delivered by the President of Nigeria Medical Association. Prof Mike Ogirimma which he discussed in the context of the assessment of our various colleagues who have occupied leadership positions in the health sector in the past,  present and hopefully in future.He also stressed that Management of all the centres was better before the partial democratization of the procedure for the appointment of the Chief Medical Directors/Medcal Directors.He frowned that however Stakeholders are not involved in the monitoring and evaluation of the tenure of d CEOs, neither are they involved in the discipline of the CEOs coupled with the fact that their are few cases of gross corruption, arrogance,  high handedness and recklessness in our leaders.He advised we must lead by good example,build up trust among ourselves and beyond our boundary and form an all inclusive management protocol must be seen in all our institutions.


Welcome Address by the Executive Chairman Dr John Oamen Blaze where he hailed the ideals of Doctors' Time Out Family  in the words of Victor Hugo,.."No Army can stop an idea whose time has come", he described DTOF first as a forum comprising of great political gladiators who have cut their teeth and have been tested in the ever turbulent waves and waters of medical politics and have in the process written their names in gold in the sand of times have truly come to stay and he also postulated that the forum would envolve into the next best thing that could ever happen in the anals of the medical world only second to the discovery of penicilin by Sir Alexander Fleming.He reiterated his hope that members of the DTOF will revulutionalise and chart the way forward for the nation's medical practice that is for now almost like a barber's chair, swinging and rocking,all motion but no movement.

There were also questions and answer sessions(with scope as current affairs, NMA/NARD/medical,christianity/islam,general knowledge and teasers) with awards organized by the designated committee (exams subcommittee) within the forum anchored by Dr Besong Past President ARD FMC Jalingo.The star prize won by Dr Tope Adeyemi of AKTH Kano. While Dr Ebenezer Agbebi of FMC Nguru went home with the gift of highest cumulative cost.


Members wearing our customized T Shirts participated in various outreaches with visit to about 8 orphanages , an adolescent health talk and 1 elderly home scattered all over the six geopolitical zones in the country loving, caring and sharing with the needy, young, elderly, less privileged and orphanages With the first picture of humanitarian gesture sent in by South South Zone anchored by ARD
UPTH Portharcourt and that won them a prize.

Thanksgiving services were conducted all over the country thanking God for a wonderful 2nd anniversary.

He listed the following as the efforts already in the pipeline to make the NGO all encompassing, versatile and complete one.

-Telegram group creation already done;due to popular request for wider membership by intending members
-Drafting of the constitution
-Inaugural Reunion (preceded by fundraising) where officers will be elected and constitution adopted.
-Full registration of this NGO
-Opening of official bank acct
-Fund raising 4 Charity/Endowment for bereaved members or those planning wedding/child birth
-Convening of physical(not online) outreaches/talks, OGM and AGM on a rotational basis.
